Hiking outside of Glacier National Park
We all know about hiking in Glacier National Park, but there are thousands of acres outside the park that are less traveled and offer spectacular options for those who love to get out and explore.
One of my favorite places to hike is in the Jewel Basin Recreation Area. With 15,000 acres, numerous trails, and 20 lakes, this area has something for everyone. If it’s 360-degree views you’re after, I recommend hiking the Mt. Aneas trail. It is a relatively short trail, but it climbs up to the top. Often times, you find yourself sharing the trail with resident mountain goats. Once at the top, views of Flathead Valley, Hungry Horse Reservoir, the Swan and Mission Mountain ranges are unparalleled. I like to hike down the backside of the mountain and go through Picnic Lakes to get back to the trailhead.
Another favorite area just to the north of us the Whitefish Legacy Trails. There are 43 miles and 14 trailheads to explore, all offering different experiences for hikers of all abilities. I have enjoyed hiking into the afternoons, then stopping in Whitefish for a bite to eat and some retail therapy before heading home.
Short on time, but need that hiking fix? The Swan River Nature Trail, known by locals as the Wild Mile trail is located just 9 miles away in Bigfork. This four-mile in and out follows the Swan River as it makes its way toward Flathead Lake. Look for white water kayakers maneuvering through the fast waters. After this hike, stop in Bigfork for an ice cream cone or some coffee.
And last, but not least, Lone Pine State Park is a fabulous place for a quick hike to the top of Lone Pine Mountain to enjoy beautiful views of Kalispell.
One of the benefits of staying with us is that we have an extra bear spray to loan you (a savings of $50), so you are always prepared on the trail. Bears are a part of life here, and we are happy to show you how to properly use it. Happy hiking!
